The Nut Cracker moves through the Underwood from trunk to hollow, gathering nuts and seeds from across the woodland. His task is to carry the strongest stores to the Archivists of the Woodland Realm beneath New Fancy Colliery, where the Badgers catalogue and preserve them within the Seed Vaults. Together they are building a living reserve from which the trees and plants of the Woodland Realm could one day be restored, should the Hollowing bring the woods to ruin. He is the Nut Cracker — gatherer, carrier and keeper of what the forest may one day need to begin again.
