I wanted to create a nuthatch illustration that felt purposeful without becoming busy.

His form, markings, and movement were shaped from real reference studies, keeping the artwork grounded in true British wildlife while allowing the Woodland Realm to gather gently around him.

Within the Realm, The Nut Cracker is one of the first helpers to answer the call of the Archivists of the Woodland Realm.

After the badgers begin storing the forest’s precious fragments beneath New Fancy Colliery, the nuthatch takes to the trees above. He gathers what the woodland can spare — hazelnuts, acorns, beechmast, seeds, and small pieces of future growth.

Piece by piece, he carries them back through bark-shadow, root-path, and moss-lit branchways.
