Pet Portraits Process
Barney's Pet Portrait
This is an example of a recent pet portrait of Barney the black labrador. If you follow the stages of his pet portraits creation showm below, it will help you with your own commission and explain what to expect as your piece of custom art is created. This is also an example of a montage portrait, where additional corner images are added to enhance the portrait and to 'tell a story' about a very special pet. Montages can be created for any commission, wildlife art, dog, horse, cat and people portraits too. Montages are ideal if you want to depict your pet in his many guises, your dog for instance, may not be just your pet, he may also be a working dog such as Barney who is depicted below. Your horse may be used for eventing, you cat may have a favourite place to sleep which just captures the personality, or simply you may have too many photos to choose from. In any of these cases a montage pet portrait may be just what you are looking for. Choose one main image, usually a head and shoulders portrait, although it can be a scene if you prefer and then as many additional smaller images as you want. As I charge by size of the portrait image rather than the canvas or paper size, you are unlimited in the number of montage images you can ask for.
Choose your main image. Ensure your images are clear, good quality and show your pet as you know him. As I will probably never meet your pet, a selection of images will help, the more information I have to work from, the more realistic your pet portrait will be.
Follow my pet portrait photography guide for the perfect image

Decide whether you prefer your main image to be a full boy image or head and shoulders only. Barney's reference image was detailed enough to be used for either so a head and shoulders portrait was chosen to show his handsome face in more detail

Watch as the portrait evolves. The latest news is always available on my blog. Here clients and vistors alike can add comments about the current work on the easel
Each stage is recorded to show progress and the likeness achieved during the portrait process
Choose from mediums of colour or graphite pencil portraits

So finally the main image is completed, the particular portrait was composed of a main image size 8"x10". To help you choose please read the price and size guide
