This is another of my dog portraits this one being of Hector the black labrador. I met Hector in person to take his photographs, in this photo he looks very regal but most of the other photos showed him as a typical labrador with his nose to the ground sniffing around. Hector has been to dog training classes and was very well behaved so I managed to take this superb photo of him showing his lovely black coat in all it's glory.
Being left handed I had wanted to start on the right hand side of the page to prevent any smudging, however I wanted to do Hector's head and face first to capture his good looks on paper to ensure I was working along the right lines. I then wanted to work on his collar before moving across to the right side of the portrait. The fur on Hector's back was a little longer than anywhere else and was a little kinked. I managed to ensure this was on his portrait, I had not noticed it before I started work on Hector and had thought his coat was smooth and short all over.
At this point I began to draw in the grass so that I could work around it, once pencil is on the page it is very difficult to erase completely so it is best to avoid light areas by colouring around them. It did prove quite fiddly going around each blade of grass though.
