I have just found the progress images for one of my earlier pencil portraits from photos. These three dogs from left to right, Blue the Collie, Saffie the pit bull and Mr Murphy the cross breed were a surprise 60th birthday present.
As usual I started work on the right hand side of the page to prevent smudging, this is Mr Murphy, a cross breed dog who obviously gets involved with the building work.
Saffie proved a little difficult to do (as all white dogs on white paper are in pencil portraits from photos) as she was very white and I needed to make her stand out, at this stage I was unsure she would look right in the portrait or get lost in the background. This is one of my more challenging dog paintings.
Finally I began work on Blue the collie. I thought Blue looked a very sweet dog and his features looked very gentle which I hoped to get across in the dog portrait.
And the finished portrait, I shaded around Saffie's head just to ensure she stood out, I was very pleased with the finished work and luckily so was my client, Roger Hale.
